What’s next for Gilas after Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers first window

MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas showcased its masterful defense against Chinese Taipei in the 2025 Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers at Philsports Arena on Sunday.
Coach Tim Cone attributed the blowout win to Gilas’ tremendous effort on both ends of the floor which earned them a sweep in the first window.
“I’m especially impressed with the way we were able to work and defend them and give them a hard time,” said Cone after Gilas’ 106-53 victory.

“I really like the way we work. We worked hard on both sides of the floor and did that for the whole game, 40 minutes. I think we have to remember that Chinese Taipei faced a Top 20 team just three days ago against New Zealand. We played the same team and these guys just worked their tails off and made them look bad and they’re not that bad, they’re a really talented team.”
Gilas recorded 10 steals and eight blocks and forced Chinese Taipei to commit 16 turnovers.
The Filipinos also hounded their opponents to a measly 29.58 percent from the field.

And with its defense clicking, Gilas had an easier time getting into the flow of things offensively.
“We just came out strong defensively, we played good team defense and the offense just came after. I’m just happy everybody contributed offensively and defensively,” said Gilas center Kai Sotto.
Sotto served as Gilas’ defensive anchor while also thriving on offense, finishing with 18 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
