MANILA, Philippines–Jamie Malonzo apologized for taking part in a viral video which saw him engaging in a fistfight.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said Monday that Malonzo called him up regarding the video that surfaced shortly after Gilas Pilipinas defeated Chinese-Taipei in the Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Malonzo didn’t see action because of gastroenteritis, Gilas coach Tim Cone said after the 106-53 rout.

He was also said to have tested positive for COVID-19 which also made him unavailable to suit up for the national side.

Cone begged off from commenting on Jamie Malonzo’s involvement when asked by reporters who attended the PBA All-Star Draft Show.

There have been conflicting reports as to how the incident occurred but Marcial was told by Malonzo that it was a case of “misunderstanding.”

The video showed Malonzo being on the receiving end of punches thrown by a male individual at a restaurant in Taguig City.
