MANILA, Philippines—Robert Bolick’s confidence in the NLEX side is motivated by something more than praises.

During the past few days in the PBA Philippine Cup, Bolick has been getting recognition from the Road Warriors’ coaching staff for serving as the squad’s cornerstone without Kevin Alas, who is currently out with a torn ACL.

“We’re lucky we have a Bolick,” said coach Frankie Lim in Filipino last week after NLEX’s 99-96 win over Meralco where the sharp shooter finished with 26 points.

After the Road Warriors’ 103-97 win over Blackwater in the on Wednesday, Bolick gained more praise even without Lim on the sideline due to a hurt thumb.

“You know what’s good about Robert? He produces a lot of scores, look at his last game, a career-high. But if you look at the assists department, he also passes well. 90 percent of the time, the ball is with Berto and 90 percent of the time, he makes good decisions,” said assistant coach Borgie Hermida.

Bolick flirted with a triple-double of 21 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, including two three the most crucial minutes of the game.

However, the positive remarks are not what’s behind Bolick stellar showing lately. What makes him more motivated is that his new mother team is a squad full of red-blooded San Beda products.

“Of course, I’m happy. All of us are Bedistas. The bond is just different, we even call ourselves the San Beda Road Warriors. We’ve been seeing each other since way back in college,” said Bolick in Filipino.

“There’s just something different with us, there’s a championship vibe in San Beda while we’re helping each other out.”

Hermida, who was one of the shot callers for NLEX alongside Jong Uichico in Lim’s absence, won four titles for the Mendiola squad during the 2010s.

Lim, of course, also became a tactician for the Red Lions while Hermida was a player.

Bolick, a three-time NCAA champion donning the Red and White, is joined in NLEX by several San Beda alums, Anthony Semerad, Baser Amer, Dave Marcelo and Jake Pascual.

Now holding a 4-1 card after successfully stretching their winning streak to three, Bolick hopes that the same San Beda winning mentality will be carried over to NLEX.
