MANILA, Philippines — Star rookie Angge Poyos missed University of Santo Tomas’ game against University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament due to dehydration.

Poyos has been leading the way for the Tigresses with an average of 22.0 points in 10 games.

“According to the coaching staff of the UST Golden Tigresses, rookie Angge Poyos will miss today’s match due to dehydration. Get well soon, Angge! Today’s Go USTe is for you and Em [Banagua],” the team wrote in a statement Wednesday.

With Jonna Perdido and Reg Jurado stepping up with 24 points each, UST turned back UP, 25-14, 25-13, 28-30, 25-15, to improve to a 10-1 record.

Tigresses coach KungFu Reyes said Poyos has been under the weather since Sunday.

“Our priority is her recovery. We have 14 players, who can step up.,” said Reyes in Filipino. “She still practiced last Sunday. Supposedly she will train with us against last night but she’s a bit dizzy.”

Reyes assured Poyos will return on Saturday in UST’s crucial match against the No. 4 Far Eastern University at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

“Expect her to return on Saturday. We’re able to win without Poyos and Em. Nothing serious about Poyos. We just rested her for a proper recovery,” he said.

Em Banagua, UST’s starting middle blocker, was also sidelined for a second straight game due to an undisclosed leg injury.

Despite missing the pair, the Tigresses dominated the Fighting Maroons in the first two sets with Perdido and Jurado doing most of the damage.

UP also played without coach Oliver Almadro, who coached his NCAA team Letran simultaneously playing against Arellano at San Andres Gym.

Deputy coach Jarod Hubalde called the shots for the Fighting Maroons.
