Spikers’ Turf: Maverick, VNS-Nasty get first wins

MANILA, Philippines — Maverick and VNS-Nasty have finally entered the win column in the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference after beating separate foes on Friday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Maverick Hard Hitters leaned on Razzle Palisoc’s 19-point effort to sweep the skidding Philippine Air Force,  25-19, 25-20, 25-9, and capture their first win in four games.

Palisoc poured in 14 spikes, three blocks, and two service aces to lead Maverick, which drew nine points from Jerome Cordez. Kim Tan chipped in eight points and nine excellent receptions in two sets of action, while Jethro Cabillan added seven points.

“We were just well prepared. We really worked hard and prepared for each other, and I just told them to desire it because they can do it,” said Maverick coach Erickson Ramos.

The Airmen slid to a 1-4 record with Louis Lumanlan and JR Labrador scoring eight and seven points, respectively.

Meanwhile,  Wewe Medina delivered 18 points to power VNS-Nasty past the winless Richmarc Sports 3B, 25-20, 25-21, 25-15.

SCHEDULE: 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference

Medina unleashed an efficient game with a 17-of-25 attacking clip on top of 12-of-17 excellent receptions and five digs as the Griffins improved to a 1-3 record tied with Maverick.

“It’s fulfilling to get this win because most of our players are new,” said VNS coach Ralph Ocampo in Filipino. “We’ve been playing well in the past games. We just committed a lot of errors. Our team has the potential but we can’t close out during games.”

“I hope this win will boost our morale and lead us to a good run,” he added.

Roniey Adviento was also instrumental for VNS with nine points, while Kenneth Culabat and Louise Bartolome added eight points each.

Richmarc bowed out of the semifinal race with a 0-5 record. Bonjomar Castel and Kaiser Rosales scored seven points each
