There’s no doubt that the latest toast of Philippine sports is Alas Pilipinas, that intrepid women’s volleyball team made up of a merry mix of professional and collegiate stars which has so far gone undefeated in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup.

The Filipinos are in the semifinals for the first time in 63 years—the farthest any PH team, men or women, has gone in the tournament’s history.

MANILA, Philippines — Faith Nisperos proved that she can deliver for Alas Pilipinas whenever her number gets called, shining in her first start to complete a four-game sweep in Pool A ahead of the AVC Challenge Cup 2024  semifinals on Sunday evening at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Nisperos delivered eight points, after playing the whole game of the Philippines’ 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 win over the winless Chinese Taipei that sealed its top spot in Pool A with a 4-0 record and forged a knockout semis duel against Kazakhstan on Tuesday. FULL STORY

MANILA, Philippines — Kazakhstan captain Sana Anarkulova fired 22 points to blast Hong Kong, 25-17, 25-18, 25-4, and earn the last semifinal ticket in Pool B to force a do-or-die match against Alas Pilipinas in the AVC Challenge Cup 2024 on a rainy Sunday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

With the Kazakhs fighting for the last semis berth in their group, Anarkulova took matters into her own hands nailing 19 of her 32 attack attempts on top of two blocks and an ace.

“This is a very serious game. It’s the last chance [for us] to go to the semifinals. We understood that and we needed to win,” said the Kazakh veteran spiker. FULL STORY

MANILA, Philippines — Alas Pilipinas coach Jorge Souza De Brito is mighty proud of his players for playing on the same page to earn a historic semifinal ticket to the AVC Challenge Cup despite the insufficient preparation time.

De Brito’s newly assembled team continued to bring pride to the country, becoming the first Philippine squad to reach the semifinals in any AVC competition in 63 years since the country joined the confederation’s sanctioned tournament in 1961.

“I’m proud to be here as the coach of the national team. Proud of the result [earned by] these guys. Three years since I’m here, they brought the guys who are young but they’re doing good and I’m really happy,” the Brazilian coach told the reporters after his best start in any competition since taking over in 2021.
