MANILA, Philippines—Former Premier Volleyball League import Janisa Johnson passed away recently after a battle with colon cancer. She was 32.
Johnson’s PVL club Petro Gazz and some of her former teammates in the Philippines offered their heartfelt condolences.
“With heavy hearts, we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family of Janisa Johnson,” wrote the Angels in a Facebook post.
“Our Finals MVP in the 2019 Reinforced Conference, who passed away after a courageous fight against cancer. Soar high with the real angels in heaven. Rest in peace, Janisa.”

According to Johnson’s family, Janisa passed away on May 25.
“In loving memory of Janisa 🤍 We will never forget your beautiful smile. May your last jump be the highest 💫 Rest in peace,” Janisa’s Instagram post by the family read.
Johnson first played in the PVL for the National University reinforced Balipure team.

She then bolstered the Petro Gazz Angels roster for the 2019 PVL Reinforced Conference.
There, Johnson helped core players Jonah Sabete, Djanel Cheng and now-Choco Mucho spiker Cherry Nunag win the title over the Creamline Cool Smashers. She was named the Finals MVP.
While ending her PVL stint shortly after, she flew to Poland to play more professional volleyball her official cancer diagnosis in 2021.
