TREAT HUEY and British partner Dominic Inglot completed their magical run by outlasting Kevin Anderson of South Africa and Sam Querrey of United States, 7-6 (9-7), 6-7 (11-9), 10-5, Sunday to capture the men’s doubles championship of the Citi Open tennis championships in Washington D.C.
Huey and Inglot exploited their long partnership to take the two-hour match over their opponents who outrank them in singles but are untested while playing together.
They split the $74,620 top purse while picking up rankings points that lifted Huey from 47th in the world to 36th, his highest so far. Inglot jumped from 77th to 52nd in the world.
Huey, who is set to represent the Philippines in the Davis Cup Group 2 promotional tie against Indonesia next month, captured his first ATP World Tour championship after taking eight titles last year in Challenger tournaments.
The southpaw 26-year-old reached three finals this year with different partners.
Huey and Inglot downed fellow University of Virginia alumni Drew Courtney and Steve Johnson (6-4, 6-4) Saturday in the semifinals.
“It’s a great experience to come here and play the tournament. I grew up watching this as a little kid. Dom and I had a fun week. It’s always more fun when you win so that definitely helps,” said Huey, who was born in Washington D.C. to a Filipino mother, in an interview for the Citi Open website:
Huey and Inglot have actually won four Challenger-level title together since 2010. But they earlier lost to Querrey, who teamed up then with fellow American James Blake. Marc Anthony Reyes
