Hero’s welcome awaits gymnast Carlos Yulo
MANILA, Philippines — A hero’s welcome in the capital awaits Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna announced on Monday.
Lacuna said the local government is planning a parade, which will begin at Leveriza Street in Malate, where Yulo grew up. The parade may pass through areas near Malacañang, the University Belt, and will end at Manila City Hall.
Article continues after this advertisement“This is our way of paying tribute to Caloy’s greatness,” Lacuna said in a statement.
Lacuna said the date and route of the parade are still being finalized.
She also said students in Manila are enjoined to pour into the city’s streets to welcome Yulo, who won two gold medals in the Paris Olympics.
Article continues after this advertisement“Caloy’s victory will serve as an inspiration for them to discover more Carlos Yulos among the youth of Manila and the entire Philippines,” she added.
Yulo, 24, clinched his first gold on Saturday and his second on Sunday.

The bemedalled gymnast is set to receive P10 million from the Philippine Sports Commission, under Republic Act 10699 or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.
Yulo is also set to receive P3 million from the House of Representatives as well as a fully furnished three-bedroom condominium unit worth P24 million in McKinley Hill from Megaworld, and other pledges of free lifetime food, supplies, and services from private companies.
