MAR Raphael Teng and Jacob Martin launched their respective bids with victories in two age group divisions over the weekend at the start of the Olivarez-Philta Open tennis championships presented by Palawan Pawnshop Express Pera Padala at the Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque.
Teng posted an easy 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Tim Gumban in the 14-under along with Martin, the sixth seed who won by walkover against Miguel Cerrado.
In the 12-U, top seed Martin blasted John Guanzon, 6-0, 6-0, while second seed Teng drubbed Matthew Garcia, 6-0, 6-1.
Girls’ 16-U favorites Roxanne Resma and Rachelle de Guzman also routed their respective foes. Resma, the top pick, ripped Janna Hernandez, 6-0, 6-1, while No. 2 De Guzman booted out Andie Villarosa, 6-0, 6-1.
Resma will next take on No. 6 Jzash Canja while De Guzman will face No. 8 Khim Iglupas. Canja and Iglupas both won by default.
Resma also firmed up her campaign in the premier 18-U event as she downed Kim Uytico, 6-1, 6-1, to set up a second round encounter with Isabella Mendoza who routed Catherine Po, 6-2, 6-0. Joining her in the next round were Macy Gonzales, Eren Penados, Lenelyn Milo, Maia Balce, Katrina Orteza, Ana Bienes, Harem Bugarin, Canja and De Guzman.
In boys’ 14-U Jerome Romualdez slammed Santino Vistan, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 3 Arthur Pantino thrashed Ambrose Besas, 6-0, 6-0, to make the next round.
Other 14-U winners were fifth seed Chris Prulla over Rodel Velarde, 6-1, 6-4; Vincent Alanis against Thomas Puno, 6-1, 6-1; and Marcus del Rosario versus Al Buharan, 6-1, 6-4.
