MANILA, Philippines — Sherwin Meneses is set to take over as the National University Lady Bulldogs head coach ahead of their title-retention bid in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

Sources privy to the situation told Inquirer Sports that the NU women’s volleyball team had chosen Meneses, a five-time PVL champion coach from Creamline, to replace Norman Miguel.

Meneses is set to meet the team, led by Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon, on Monday.

Another source bared that several coaches were considered including Alas Pilipinas coach Jorge Souza De Brito and Japanese coach Taka Minowa of Akari, the husband of former NU star Jaja Santiago.

Meneses is returning to the UAAP eight years after leaving his alma mater Adamson in Season 78, when he handled the women’s volleyball squad led by Jema Galanza and Mylene Paat.

In his league comeback, Meneses will handle MVPs Belen and Solomon, Lams Lamina, Sheena Toring, Arah Panique, and Vange Alinsug in their hope of defending the title after ruling Season 86.

Miguel had stepped down from his post as he hopes to explore an administrative role at NU Laguna.

Inquirer Sports reached out to NU for comment but it has yet to respond as of posting time.

Meneses didn’t confirm nor deny the development, politely declining to comment as of the moment following Creamline’s 25-16, 25-19, 31-19 over sister team Choco Mucho in the PVL Reinforced Conference on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The NU Lady Bulldogs have withdrawn from the VLeague due to their participation in two international training camps in Taiwan and the VTV Cup in Ninh Binh, Vietnam.

NU reclaimed the title in the Season 86 finals after sweeping UST. The school also ruled the Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals.
