MANILA, Philippines—Barangay Ginebra guard Stephen Holt had one thing in mind in the Gin Kings’ triumph over NLEX in Group B of the PBA Governors’ Cup at Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday night.

Aiming to bounce back after a stunning setback to Blackwater on Friday, Ginebra coach Tim Cone had one instruction for Holt and the Gin Kings against the Road Warriors.

“From the jump, coach wanted us to be aggressive on both ends of the floor as players and as a team and I wanted to set the tone defensively,” said Holt after Ginebra’s 119-91 romp of NLEX.

“I’m here to win and do whatever coach tells me to do. I had a great offensive game tonight [too]. I know it won’t be like that every single game but at the end of the day, it’s all about your mindset in being aggressive on both ends of the floor.”

Holt did more than just that.

Aside from serving as one of Ginebra’s defensive anchors by limiting NLEX import Myke Henry to just 16 points, Holt also caused problems for the Road Warriors in other areas with 26 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

The reigning Rookie of the Year, however, clarified that providing the offensive firepower wasn’t even his primary goal with playing superb defense being his main objective for the Gin Kings.

“I just think that you can see the little things highlighted even more,” said Holt.

“I was a good defender in Terrafirma but I think with this team, my defense is highlighted even more by defending imports and just being a team player.”

Ginebra’s other guards Maverick Ahanmisi, Scottie Thompson and rookie RJ Abarrientos also got it going offensively as the three combined for 58 points.

Holt’s stellar performance also allowed Justin Brownlee to take it easy. Brownlee, who erupted for a career-high 51 points last week, chipped in 13 points.

The former Dyip standout and Ginebra look to sustain their winning ways when they face Phoenix on Friday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
