PBA: Vintage Jayson Castro comes through in clutch for TNT

MANILA, Philippines—TNT has endured various changes, but one thing remains the same–the Tropang Giga still rely on their veteran Jayson Castro to make the right plays.
With TNT clinging to a 93-91 lead against Converge approaching the final minute, TNT turned to Castro who delivered a dagger 3-pointer with 1:09 remaining.
Article continues after this advertisement“As a veteran, I have a job to do for my teammates and coach Chot (Reyes) makes to be given plays. I have to find ways for us to execute. This game is a way to test our character,” said Castro in Filipino after helping TNT hold off Converge, 98-91, in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday.
“We were up by 16 and in the second half, they were able to catch us so it’s a good test for us come playoff time, we’ll bring this experience.”

The 38-year-old Castro, the eight-time champion who is in his 16th season in the league, scored 14 points with five rebounds and three assists to boot.
Article continues after this advertisement“I’m thankful for the coaching staff and my teammates despite my (missed) free throws,” said Castro, who made just 50 percent of his eight tries at the charity stripe.
“Their confidence in me is still there. I’m always ready during crucial possessions. I’m so thankful for coach Chot,” he added.
The Tropang Giga exacted revenge against the FiberXers, who beat them last August 27 on a four-point shot by Scotty Hopson with only three seconds left.
The victory hiked TNT’s record to 5-1 to reclaim the lead in Group A while Converge slipped to 2-4.
