MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines crushed National University, 89-62, to stay unbeaten in three games in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Mark Belmonte brought out his best game for the Fighting Maroons, who tied idle defending champion La Salle at the top of the ladder, as he led the balanced attack with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting in just 15 minutes of action of the most lopsided win of the season so far.
Belmonte set the tone for UP’s dominance, scoring 12 points in the first half, where the team led as many as 31 points with Francis Lopez sinking a layup for a 53-22 spread with 50 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

MANILA, Philippines — Ethan Galang flourished down the stretch as University of the East came back to beat Far Eastern University, 56-51, in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Galang scored the game’s last eight points, including back-t0-back triples that pulled the Red Warriors ahead, 54-51, with 25 ticks to go after trailing by four inside the final three minutes.
After a pair of missed 3-pointers by the Tamaraws’ Jorick Bautista, Galang put the finishing touches with two free throws and gave the Red Warriors their first win in three tries.

MANILA, Philippines — National University unleashed a strong third quarter to dominate University of the Philippines, 76-64, for a share of the lead in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Tied at 41 at the half, the Lady Bulldogs scored 16 unanswered points and outscored the Lady Maroons, 21-2, in the third quarter for a 62-43 spread heading into the final frame. UP was held to without a field goal in the pivotal third period.
Pringle Fabruada anchored NU with 16 points and five rebounds in just close to 16 minutes of playing time. Aloha Betanio chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, and four steals, while Jainaba Konateh had 12 points and six rebounds to improve to a 3-0 record tied with defending champion University of Santo Tomas.

MANILA, Philippines—University of the Philippine guard JD Cagulangan may have had a scoring exhibition to help the Fighting Maroons to a 2-0 start, but the graduating guard was far from satisfied.
The Fighting Maroons blazed past the University of the East in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament but it didn’t come without difficulties.
“We need consistency with what we’re doing,” said Cagulangan in Filipino after their 81-71 win over the Red Warriors on Saturday.

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin preached patience after the Blue Eagles dropped to 0-3 to start the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.
The Blue Eagles are having their worst start in a decade—an unprecedented situation under Baldwin— following a 74-61 loss to archrival and defending champion La Salle in front of 12,478 fans on Sunday evening at Mall of Asia Arena.
The four-time UAAP champion coach is taking their winless start in stride.

Winning its first three games, including a thorough whitewashing of an old, bitter rival just a few nights ago has justified La Salle’s tag as a powerhouse and the consensus team to beat in Season 87 of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
Defending the championship is a first-time experience for this batch of Green Archers, whose cornerstone, reigning MVP Kevin Quiambao, is leading a no-nonsense approach in trying to accomplish that task.
La Salle brought down rock-solid National University to touch off that streak, which was capped by a 74-61 demolition of Ateneo just last Sunday. But even with those, Quiambao remains on even keel, the same attitude that his teammates have.
