PBA: Tim Cone, Ginebra look to boost their record as playoffs near

MANILA, Philippines—The top spot may not be in Ginebra’s total control with the elimination round of the PBA Governors’ Cup nearing its end, but that doesn’t mean the Gin Kings and coach Tim Cone will take it easy in their final game.

On Wednesday, Ginebra gave Phoenix the boot, 112-96, while also improving their record to 6-3 with the quarterfinals spot locked in.

However, Cone wants more than a secured seat in the playoffs.

“We’re always on the philosophy of going out and trying to win every game, whether it’s non-bearing or not,” said Cone.

“Generally, right now, if you look at the other side, TNT is playing the best and you certainly don’t want to play TNT.”

As it stands, two teams ahead of Ginebra, which is listed as the third seed, in the standings. San Miguel Beer is currently at the top with a 6-2 card followed by Rain or Shine with an identical record by virtue of the “win over the other rule.”

With two games left for both San Miguel Beer and Rain or Shine, the top seed is still on a toss-up and Ginebra certainly has its eye one two top seats.

“We want to try and get as high as we can so we play the team in the lowest part of the standing on the other side. That’s just logical and something we have to do,” Cone said.

“We really don’t control it as much as we’d like to so we just have to go out and win our last game and make our record the best it can go.”

Rain or Shine and San Miguel Beer’s fates are out of the Gin Kings’ hands, for sure.

Ginebra still has a chance to improve their bid on a first or second seed when it faces NLEX, which is still looking for a quarters seat, on Sunday at Araneta Coliseum.
