UAAP: Jorick Bautista overcomes struggles to lead first FEU win
MANILA, Philippines — For three quarters, Far Eastern University guard Jorick Bautista was having a hard time getting into his rhythm against Ateneo on Sunday night.
But his offensive struggles never discouraged him as he kept his focus and continued to play the right way. And that allowed Bautista to snap out of his slump just in time to deliver the Tamaraws their first win after opening UAAP Season 87 with five consecutive losses.
“Sinabi ko lang sa sarili ko na gumawa lang ako ng tama kasi alam kong ire-reward ako sa huli. Yun nga na-reward ako composed lang at ginawa ko lang yung trabaho ko sa court. I’m struggling pero dumepensa ako doon ako kumuha ng kumpiyansa ko sa huli,” said the third-year player.
UAAP: FEU outlasts Ateneo in overtime for its first win
MANILA, Philippines–Jorick Bautista willed Far Eastern University to its first win at the expense of Ateneo, 66-65, in overtime in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament Sunday night at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Bautista caught fire late as he fired 14 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Tamaraws snapped a five-game losing skid.
“Trinabaho talaga namin yung mga extra work namin actually nag-shoot around pa nga kami kaninang umaga kasi yun yung gusto ni coach Sean sa amin sanayin namin yung shoot around which is lumabas yung laro nagbunga yung mga pagod namin sa training,” said the third-year guard Bautista.

UAAP: Mike Phillips dedicates game to La Salle dorm guard
MANILA, Philippines — Mike Phillips played with added strength and motivation in powering defending champion La Salle past University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday night.
Phillips had one of his best games of the season, notching 12 points and 18 rebounds–half of which coming on the offensive glass–and he dedicated his performance to “one of his closest friends” Doleo Susalta, a security guard at the Green Archers’ dormitory who passed away Friday.
UAAP: La Salle starts slow, finishes strong in rout of UST
MANILA, Philippines–La Salle started slow before picking up some steam to hammer out an 88-67 triumph over University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament at Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.
A consistent force for the Green Archers, Mike Phillips, who was grieving the loss of a friend, showed up with another double-double of 12 points and 18 rebounds as the Green Archers improved to a 5-1 record.
“We’ve been struggling the past couple of days, a couple of games, but to continue to be that force, it’s just really to try our best to wake up every day and really appreciate what you have. No matter how hard it really gets, when people are no longer here, just really stay true to what you have,” Phillips said.
