MANILA, Philippines — Rainer Maga came through when it mattered most for University of the East, sinking the big shots to help end a nine-year winning drought against Ateneo in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.

Without Ethan Galang, Maga filled the gaps for the Red Warriors and ignited the 11-0 fourth run that stifled the Blue Eagles and gave them a 62-54 lead with 1:44 left from a 35-45 late third-quarter deficit.

“I trusted myself and did my best because our coaches and my teammates trusted me,” said Maga, who scored eight points on top of three rebounds, and three assists, in Filipino after the 69-62 win–UE’s fourth straight.

University of the East came alive in the fourth quarter with a 32-point performance on the way to a 69-62 win against Ateneo in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament Wednesday night at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Precious Momowei played all 40 minutes of the game to register 18 points and 15 rebounds, his first double-double of the season, to extend the Red Warriors’ winning streak to four in six games.

UE also ended its long losing streak to Ateneo, dating back to UAAP Season 78 when it last won on November 14, 2015.

MANILA, Philippines —In the absence of its main man JD Cagulangan, University of Philippines’ other guards found a way to keep the ball rolling for the Fighting Maroons.

Harold Alarcon stepped up to the plate to help UP overcome a slow start against the University of Santo Tomas and stay unbeaten in six games in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.

Alarcon led UP’s collective effort with 16 points, three rebounds, and three assists in their 81-70 win over UST on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

University of the Philippines needed to dig deep in the second half after trailing University of Santo Tomas before pulling off an 81-70 victory to remain undefeated in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Much better (second half), definitely. After allowing 23 points in the first quarter alone and then limiting them to 28 in the second half. Obviously, mas maganda yung second half namin in terms of effort, in terms of adjustments,” assistant coach Christian Luanzon, speaking on behalf of Goldwin Monteverde, said after restricting the Growling Tigers to just seven points in the final frame.

With JD Cagulangan feeling under the weather, other Fighting Maroon guards stepped up including Harold Alarcon who tallied 16 points with three rebounds and assists for UP’s sixth consecutive win in as many games.

Tacky Tacatac delivered her best game so far with 20 points to lead University of Santo Tomas past skidding University of the Philippines, 84-60, in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Tacatac fired four of his six triples and scored 14 in the fourth quarter, capping a 17-2 run for a 76-55 spread with 4:28 left as the hot-shooting guard’s 3-point barrage kept the Fighting Maroons at bay.

Far Eastern University found itself at the bottom of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament standings after five consecutive losses to begin its campaign.

But the Tamaraws’ record doesn’t necessarily reflect the way they have been challenging the rest of the field. And Far Eastern looked like a team that just needed something to break its way for a breakthrough triumph.

It finally caught one Sunday night at the expense of Ateneo, 66-65, behind the late-game heroics of sniper Jorick Bautista.

MANILA, Philippines — La Salle’s men’s and women’s basketball squads are having contrasting UAAP Season 87 campaigns so far as the first round comes to its final week.

That, however, didn’t stop two standout Archers, Michael Phillips and Luisa San Juan, from guiding their respective crews to big victories in the past week as they were hailed the Collegiate Press Corps Players of the Week for the period September 25 to 29.

Phillips was a consistent force for the Green Archers yet again after posting double-double performances in their wins against Far Eastern University and University of Santo Tomas to reach a 5-1 win-loss card.
