UM rookies flex muscles, give Hawks twice-to-beat cushion
MANILA, Philippines—University of Manila’s rookies from Davao, Eugene Torres and Rhandelle Colina powered the Hawks past Our Lady of Fatima, 73-66, Sunday to strengthen its hold of the top of the semifinals of the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities at the UM Gym. Torres, a 6-foot-2 forward, fired 36 points, while six-foot guard Colina chipped in 15 markers for the Hawks who also assured themselves of a twice-to-beat edge in the Final Four with their 14th win in 16 games. UM hopes to make it to the finals for a second straight time after finishing runner-up to San Sebastian of Cavite last year. Informatics strengthened its Final Four bid with an 81-58 rout of two-time defending champion SSCR-Cavite. The Icons can make it to the semifinals outright if they win at least one of their last two elimination round games.
