UAAP: Nic Cabañero explosion fuels UST closer to Final Four
MANILA, Philippines—As the Final Four race for the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament reaches a fever pitch, Nic Cabañero boosted UST’s hopes of climbing up the ladder.
The Growling Tigers defeated the University of the East, 76-67, and pushed them closer to their goal of reaching the Final Four behind the heroics of their offensive leader in Cabañero
But instead of reveling in a new season-high, the sharpshooting guard immediately turned his attention to the Growling Tigers’ next outing amid the intense fight for the fourth seed.
UAAP: UST scores crucial win over UE, boosts Final Four bid
Despite squandering a 27-point lead, University of Santo Toma survived University of the East’s multiple comeback attempts for a 76-67 decision in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament Saturday night at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“The players didn’t give up until the end. Of course, there were those key runs—they made 3-4 three-point shots to keep it close. We stayed focused, especially since our last games will decide if we make it to the Final Four. This game was important for us. You could see the desire in the players,” said Coach Pido Jarencio.
Nic Cabañero led the Growling Tigers with 27 points and eight rebounds as UST, which was coming off a 67-62 loss to National University on Wednesday, somehow eased the pressure by other Final Four hopefuls chasing it.

UAAP: Tab Baldwin hopes Ateneo can finish Season 87 strong
MANILA, Philippines—Ateneo may be on the brink of elimination after Saturday but that isn’t stopping coach Tab Baldwin from staying optimistic about the Blue Eagles’ remaining games in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.
After absorbing yet another loss at the hands of Far Eastern University at Araneta Coliseum, 65-54, Baldwin admitted that while the Blue Eagles are “knocked down,” the squad has every capability to bounce back for their two remaining games.
“We’re knocked down as a program and I have every confidence that we will respond and learn from the situations that we’re in. We will use it as motivation to grow in the future,” said the veteran tactician.
UAAP: Janrey Pasaol gets timely career game for Final Four-chasing FEU
MANILA, Philippines—Far Eastern University swingman Janrey Pasaol chose no better time to explode than on Saturday to keep the Tamaraws in contention for a Final Four spot in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament.
With almost no room for losses for FEU, Pasaol came alive to push the Tamaraws past Ateneo, 65-54, bolstering the squad’s chances for a playoff spot.
Pasaol, as the young gun that he is, didn’t fail to acknowledge coach Sean Chambers for his coming out party for Season 87.
UAAP: FEU keeps Final Four hopes alive after beating Ateneo anew
MANILA, Philippines–Final Four hopeful Far Eastern University climbed up the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament standings after repeating over Ateneo, 65-54, on Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“I’m so proud of these guys. Like I said, last game. I’ve been pretty tough on them in practice [I told them], I’m hard on you with discipline because I love you. If I don’t love you, I won’t discipline you because I want the best for you,” FEU coach Sean Chambers said.
“Their response has been amazing. Basically, they’re just good kids. They’re disciplined. And they wanna win … at the end of the day, they kept fighting,” Chambers added.

UAAP women’s basketball: UST clobbers UE to bolster hold on No. 2
University of Santo Tomas returned to its winning ways and overcame also-ran University of the East, 84-62, to solidify its hold on second place in the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball tournament on Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After a 70-76 loss to NU Lady Bulldogs last Wednesday, the Growling Tigresses quickly bounced back to improve their record to 10-2 with a game and half cushion over the Adamson Lady Falcons for the second seed.
“We shouldn’t get too comfortable. Of course, we need to have mental toughness. When you’re one of the top teams, there’s a tendency to relax. They need to keep the mindset of taking it one day at a time and always sticking to the process,” UST assistant coach Ged Austria said.
UAAP women’s basketball: Ateneo clinches Final Four berth
Ateneo completed the UAAP Season 87 women’s basketball Final Four cast after eliminating Far Eastern University, 85-70, on Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
With their third consecutive victory, the Blue Eagles improved to 7-5 and extinguished the Final Four hopes of the Lady Tamaraws, La Salle, and Univeristy of the Philippines.
Ateneo, which booked its third straight Final Four appearance, also remains in the hunt for the third seed behind Adamson Lady Falcons, who are 8-3.
