Army, Sandugo-SSC eye volley victories

Philippine Army and Sandugo-San Sebastian, still groping for their top forms, try to stay on top with similar three straight wins when they battle separate rivals in the Shakey’s V-League Open today at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The defending champion Lady Troopers duel tough newcomer Cagayan at 2 p.m., while the Lady Stags battle Philippine Navy at 4.

Ateneo, the first conference titlist, goes for a second straight triumph against Far Eastern University in the 6 p.m. nightcap.

“We have mature players, but the problem is the cohesiveness of the team,” said Sandugo coach Roger Gorayeb.

The Lady Stags, tied with the Lady Troopers at 2-0, are coming off a grueling five-set victory, 25-23, 25-22, 15-25, 21-25, 15-10, against Cagayan last Tuesday.

Similarly, the Lady Troopers survived the Lady Tamaraws, 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-17, in securing their second straight win.

Rachel Ann Daquis, who has amassed 27 points in her first two outings, leads Army along with sisters Michelle and Mayet Carolino.

But the Rising Suns look capable of an upset behind Thais Sutadta Chuewulim and Kunbang Pornpimol and early scoring leader Sandra delos Santos, who paces the league with a 41-point total.
