MANILA,Philippines–Far Eastern University and Ateneo will clash for the UAAP men’s basketball championship for the first time in seven years starting this Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
But while the 2003 showdown had the Tamaraws sweeping the Blue Eagles in the best-of-three series, Ateneo coach Norman Black this time expects a tighter duel between the league’s top seeds.
“I don’t see either team having a distinct advantage, to be honest, even though they’ve beaten us twice (this season),” said Black.
“We had our chances to win in both games. I’m looking forward to playing them again.”
The Blue Eagles, who are seeking a historic third straight championship, are the slight underdogs this time, unlike in 2003, where they were the favorites.
Although the Tamaraws again have the materials to win it all, FEU coach Glenn Capacio said it will take more than just a formidable lineup to dethrone the Eagles.
“Against Ateneo, we can’t rely on individual plays,” said Capacio. “We must have better ball rotation.”
The Tamaraws swept the Eagles in the elimination round, 72-69 and 74-72.
MVP Ryan Roose “RR” Garcia, Aldrech Ramos, Reil Cervantes and Rookie of the Year Terrence Romeo banner the
Tamaraws, who needed an extra period to eliminate the La Salle Green Archers, 69-59, in Thursday’s Final Four game.
Ateneo came out more dominating in its own semifinal duel with Adamson as Emman Monfort, Kirk Long and Nico
Salva starred in the Blue Eagles’ 68-55 crushing of the Falcons last Sunday.
“What we’ve talked about the entire year is trying to improve as the league goes on,” said Black.
“We’re never at our best at the beginning of the league. We thought if we kept on improving, we might have a chance to win again.”
