MANILA, Philippines — With a chip on her shoulder as the top overall pick of the first-ever PVL Rookie Draft, Thea Gagate made her much anticipated pro debut and was immediately welcomed by a battle against her former La Salle teammates.

Gagate was good as advertised as she delivered a team-high 13 points built on 11 attacks, one block, and an ace only for her debut to be spoiled by a 14-25, 21-25, 25-19, 23-25 loss to early leader Akari in the 2024-25 All-Filipino Conference on Thursday night at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Admitting she had physical struggles before her debut, the 6-foot-2 middle blocker was pleased with her performance, taking the high expectations in stride to help the winless Thunderbelles enter the win column this season.

“We’re doing good in the first set and then after, little by little we’re showing quite a bad attitude, they kinda relaxed already,” coach Taka Minowa said after the Chargers missed a chance to sweep the Thunderbelles who snatched the third set.

Ivy Lacsina led Akari, which is coming from a first medal finish in the last PVL Reinforced Conference, with 24 points, all but two on attacks as Eli Soyud is starting to be consistent with 15 points.

MANILA, Philippines — Choco Mucho coach Dante Alinsunurin is happy to see Kat Tolentino’s hard work in practice translate to her resurgence at the start of the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference.

Tolentino unleashed a season-high 27 points including seven big blocks to deliver Choco Mucho’s first win, edging out Galeries Tower, 27-29, 25-20, 25-19, 17-25, 15-12, on Thursday at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Alinsunurin said Tolentino has always been one of their most reliable players and that’s why he’s been turning to the star opposite spiker, who is regaining her top condition despite her auditory condition, so far in the PVL.

MANILA, Philippines — Lorraine Pecaña proved that she can rise to the occasion for Choco Mucho sans captain Maddie Madayag as the rookie played her best game yet, hitting seven blocks in their first win in the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference.

Pecaña connived with Kat Tolentino’s 27-point explosion as the towering pair combined for 14 of the team’s 22 blocks to deny Galeries Tower’s gallant stand and escape with a  27-29, 25-20, 25-19, 17-25, 15-12 conquest on Thursday at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

The lone pick of Choco Mucho in the first-ever Rookie Draft drilled three crucial blocks in the fifth set to help her team bounce back from the opening-day loss to Petro Gazz and improve to a 1-1 record.

MANILA, Philippines — Capital1 rookies Leila Cruz and Roma Mae Doromal brought their A-game against the undermanned but seasoned Chery Tiggo in their 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference campaign opener.

Cruz, the No.2 overall pick of Capital1, unleashed a career-high 20 points including five blocks and tallied 16 digs but it went for naught as they blew a 2-1 match lead and fell to a 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 18-25, 11-15 defeat to Chery Tiggo on Tuesday evening at Philsports Arena.

Cruz said she just wanted to make up for her bad start and needed to step up to the challenge of sustaining their rise in the Reinforced led by Marina Tushova.

MANILA, Philippines — After an exodus at Chery Tiggo, Ara Galang led the team’s collective effort to eke out a come-from-behind win over the gritty Capital1 and jumpstart their 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference.

The Crossovers were pushed to their limits right at the start of their post-Eya Laure era as they also missed key members Mylene Paat, Jen Nierva, and Jas Nabor leaving an undermanned team, which also lost EJ Laure and Buding Duremdes.

But Galang and the Crossovers stuck to their collective effort to fight back from a 1-2 deficit before surviving the Solar Spikers, 20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 15-11, on Tuesday at Philsports Arena.

PLDT was left wounded after a controversial exit in the PVL Reinforced Conference.

But the High Speed Hitters will not wallow on what happened; they would rather rise from the ashes of that disappointing finish and continue striving to be better in this All-Filipino Conference.

“In our sessions with a sports psychologist [we learned that] it can’t be the main focus [for the rest of our lives],” coach Rald Ricafort said in Filipino, referring to a controversial defeat to Akari that capped the team’s previous season.
