MANILA, Philippines—Tennis legend Rafael Nadal officially called it a career on Wednesday (Manila time), tugging at the hearts of fans and remarkable names in the sport, including Filipina ace Alex Eala.
Eala paid tribute to Nadal, one of the sport’s greatest figures, in an Instagram post, thanking him for the inspiration that got her to where she is right now.
“Thank you Rafa! You’ve influenced me in more ways than you know,” wrote Eala, who was recently in the country to watch a UAAP game.

Even Nadal’s longtime rival Roger Federer, who has also retired from the sport in 2022, had to pay respect despite their intense rivalry throughout the years.
“You know what, Rafa, you made me enjoy the game even more,” wrote Federer on an X post (formerly Twitter).
“I know you’re focused on the last stretch of your epic career. We will talk when it’s done. For now, I just want to congratulate your family and team, who all played a massive role in your success.”
“I want you to know that your old friend is always cheering for you, and will be cheering just as loud for everything you do next. “
