MANILA, Philippines—A year ago, La Salle completed a UAAP Finals comeback against University of the Philippines after losing Game 1.

On Sunday, the Green Archers found themselves facing the same predicament against familiar rivals following a 73-65 loss in the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball Finals opener.

However, to pull off another rally, La Salle will need immense belief, according to Mike Phillips.

“It’s really important to keep believing in our system. When things hit the wall, you can’t drop everything so this is really where you’ll be tested,” said the dynamic La Salle forward.

“Your faith in the Lord is tested, your faith in everyone is tested and so will your faith in yourself.”

Phillips tried his best to avoid a repeat of what happened last season but his 17 points and 11 rebounds were still not enough to lift the Archers.

While Phillips knows that it will take a lot to achieve the same feat, La Salle’s coaching staff is confident they can do it again.

“I’m sure we can [recover],” said assistant coach Oliver Bunyi with Inquirer Sports.

“Last year’s Game 1 loss against UP was much tougher. We lost by 30 points. So we’re confident that we’ll bounce back on Wednesday,” he added.

Veteran point guards Evan Nelle and Mark Nonoy played vital roles in La Salle’s finals comeback last season. Phillips has embraced that leadership role for the Archers.

“I think, as a leader, words can only go so far. I think us veterans should really lead by actions,” said Phillips.

“It’s not so much about trying to replicate what we did last year but about what we can do with what we have this year. We have a lot of young guys that I love. They compete hard and I love who they are so I’ll try to lead by actions. I think that’s best.”
