PVL: Petro Gazz shuts down Cignal to rise to the top before the break
Petro Gazz dented the previously unscathed record of Cignal with an overpowering 25-19, 25-21, 25-18 sweep to soar to the No. 1 spot in the PVL All-Filipino Conference Saturday night at PhilSports Arena.
Brooke van Sickle brought all the heat with 19 points from 13 attacks and six blocks together with Myla Pablo who finished with with 15 attack points to continue to wreak havoc in the Angels’ four-game win streak that brought them to a 5-1 card.

I’m just so proud of the team and it’s good to win against Cignal. They’re a very, very good team. They’re very scrappy and they know how to win. I’m very proud leaving on a high note before Christmas,” Van Sickle said.

“Kinuha talaga namin yung momentum namin sa four win streak namin kaya sabi lang namin tulong-tulong lang kami as a team, kung ano yung ginagalaw ngayon kailangan tuloy-tuloy kami … halos lahat naman nag-contribute din so naging maganda yung resulta namin in this game,” Pablo said.
Article continues after this advertisementIn her second game back, MJ Phillips added 11 points as Aiza-Maizo Pontillas returned to catch 10 excellent digs with Blove Barbon’s 11 excellent receptions and Djanel Cheng 11 excellent sets.
“Nagkaamuyan talaga this time, kahit anong set or kahit anong receive nagagawan namin ng paraan,” Cheng said.
Petro Gazz encountered very little resistance from Cignal and in the final frame Angels stormed to a 13-9 lead. The Angels outlasted the HD Spikers despite committing more errors, 20-14.

Phillips kept the Angels afloat in the tail-end, 22-16, before Van Sickle and Jonah Sabete hammered the last nails in the coffin,
The HD Spikers absorbed their first loss this conference for a 4-1 standing with Ces Molina the only player crossing twin digits with 10 points. Vanie Gandler had nine points as Gel Cayuna dished out 11 excellent sets.
Petro Gazz reopens its campaign next year versus Chery Tiggo on Jan 21 in the same Pasig City Venue after Cignal regroups and tries to pick up where it left off against skidding Galeries Tower.
