UST continues streak in UAAP women’s beach volley

MANILA, Philippines—Determined to get an outright trip to the finals, University of Santo Tomas kept its unbeaten streak in the 75th UAAP women’s beach volleyball tournament Sunday in the UE Caloocan sand court.

MVP Judy Caballejo and Maru Banaticla downed National University’s Dindin Santiago and Jen Reyes, 21-13, 21-15, to improve to 6-0 with only one game left in the eliminations—closer to a “thrice-to-beat” edge.

NU, meanwhile, stole the spotlight in men’s beach volleyball.

Josephenry Tipay and Edwin Tolentino stunned Far Eastern University with 21-19, 15-21, 15-11, win over Arvin Avila and Karl de la Calzada.

The Bulldogs halted Tamaraws’ league record-run of 20 straight wins and clinched first-ever Final Four stint in men’s beach volley.

Adamson pair of Pau Soriano and Sheila Pineda walloped University of the East’s Jessica Paron and Francislyn Cais, 21-1, 21-13, while Wensh Tiu and Kim Fajardo of the Lady Archers downed Aia del Mundo and Pau Genido, 21-6, 21-11, in the women’s play.

Adamson and La Salle, which will face each other on Wednesday, remain in joint second at 5-1.

FEU Lady Tamaraws on via default over Ateneo Lady Eagles in the other women’s match for only their first win of the season.

In the other men’s results, La Salle repulses UST, 21-11, 23-21, while Adamson outlasted UE, 21-17, 21-14, as both winning squads move through to the semifinals.

FEU also bounced back from its stunning loss to NU a 21-9, 21-15 win over Ateneo later in the afternoon for a 5-1 record.
