MANILA, Philippines — Gerz Petallo believes team work will be Far Eastern University’s biggest strength this UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

Petallo scattered eight kills, five blocks, and two aces to finish with 15 points as FEU jumpstarted its campaign with a rousing 25-19, 16-25, 25-14, 25-20 win on Saturday night at Mall of Asia Arena.

“It’s not just one or two players carrying the team—we all contribute. That’s the biggest factor in why we won,” said the third-year spiker.

MANILA, Philippines — Jazlyn Ellarina is grateful to find a new home at Far Eastern University where she is thriving in a new position in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

From being part of the stacked National University as an opposite spiker two years ago, Ellarina got her break as a middle blocker and she made most of her playing time to help FEU beat the University of Santo Tomas, 25-19, 16-25, 25-14, 25-20, on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Far Eastern University  clinched its first victory of the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament after beating University of Santo Tomas , 25-19, 16-25, 25-14, 25-20, on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Lady Tamaraws gave coach Tina Salak a winning return, outworking the Golden Tigresses in the two-hour affair that capped off the opening day of the volleyball competition.

“Ang tagal ko din inantay na makabalik. But here, yung direction ng team andoon naman then going against UST, ang tagal namin pinag aralan, two weeks. Hindi naman nasayang yung effort namin and lahat ng mga sacrifices ng mga bata, collectively, lahat, pati sa mga coaching staff,” Salak said.

MANILA, Philippines — Khy Cepada made a potent pair with Van Bangayan to lead the charge for the rebuilding University of the East in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

Just like the old times, UE turned to Cepada and Bangayan to rise from a 0-2 deficit against the University of the Philippines, which is the new home of its former players led by Casiey Dongallo.

However, the Lady Warriors fell short ,18-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-13, 13-15, on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

MANILA, Philippines — Kianne Olango seeks to translate her success in the girls’ division by bringing back the University of the Philippines to the Final Four in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

After a successful high school career with National University Nazareth School, Olango debuted in style for UP with 15 points including four blocks to avoid a meltdown at the hands of the gritty University of the East in five sets, 25-18, 26-24, 24-26,13-25, 15-13, on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Olango, who led the Lady Bullpups to a Season 85 title run and won the MVP, said she is still learning under a new environment as UP tries to rise from a string of forgettable seasons. The Fighting Maroons have not been to the Final Four for the past nine years.

MANILA, Philippines–University of the Philippines (UP) survived a gritty fightback from University of the East (UE), 25-18, 26-24, 24-26, 13-25, 15-13, to open the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

“First game of the season, of course, coming into this season, excited yung mga players, hindi pa nila alam what to expect. Hindi rin natin alam kung ano yung changes ng UE since nawalan sila ng players, kung ano yung gagalawin nila,” new UP head coach Benson Bocboc said.

“So, later on, later part lumaban sila tapos medyo kami yung na-off so buti naman nakuha namin sa dulo, in five sets,” he added.

MANILA, Philippines — Casiey Dongallo may have found her new home at the University of the Philippines after her controversial exit with her fellow California Academy products but her heart still goes out to her former school University of the East.

Dongallo, who transferred to Diliman with Kizzie Madriaga, Jelai Gajero, and other California players and coach Dr. Obet Vital, was supporting both schools in their UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball opening game on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

“Watching them is parang may panghihinayang pa rin, sana nandiyan ako sa loob ng court naglalaro pa rin. Wala namang any pagpipili sa kanila kung saan ako nakasuporta ngayon,” said Dongallo, wearing a neutral-colored top, before the Fighting Maroons survived the Lady Warriors in a thriller, 25-18, 26-24, 24-26, 13-25, 15-13.

MANILA, Philippines — Mikko Espartero was an early revelation as he powered Far Eastern University to a vengeful 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20 win over University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

With 12 of his family members from Antique cheering for him at the venue, an inspired Espartero proved his worth as a starter, hammering down a game-high 19 points on top of six digs and six receptions.

“Sobrang laking tulong yung FEU community na laging sumusuporta. Binubuhos namin yung effort namin para sa kanila, lalo na sa mga pamilya namin na nanonood lalo na first game ko ngayon pumunta pa dito galing probinsya,” said Espartero, who drilled 16 kills, two blocks and an ace.

MANILA, Philippines — Former PVL setter Rhea Dimaculangan-Villarete found a new passion as an assistant coach with the University of the East men’s volleyball team along with her brother Jumbo in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament.

UE may have started its season off the wrong foot with a 25-19, 23-25, 26-24, 16-25, 16-18 meltdown to the University of the Philippines but Dimaculangan still had a great time passing her learnings to the young Red Warriors and helping out coach Jerome Guhit on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines found a gem in the Nigerian youth national team spiker, Olayemi Raheem.

Raheem had a debut to remember as he lifted new-look UP to a come-from-behind 25-23, 24-26, 25-16, 18-16 win over the University of the East in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament opener on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The 19-year-old spiker from Nigeria introduced himself to Philippine volleyball with his athleticism and vicious attacks, firing 25 points built on a 24-of-62 attacking clip and a block off the bench.

But as the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament opens on Sunday, Khy Cepada and the University of the East Lady Warriors chose to focus on what’s in front of them instead of the exodus of their key players.

MANILA, Philippines — With the loss of key players Jonna Perdido and Xyza Gula, the University of Santo Tomas is looking to unleash the team’s next-man-up mentality in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

Perdido suffered from an ACL tear on her left knee in last year’s Shakey’s Super League, while Gula has been ruled out due to a fractured tailbone she sustained last December.

MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University returning coach Tina Salak has set the expectations high for the Lady Tamaraws believing they are no longer underdogs in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament. 

After FEU return to the Final Four last year– forcing National University to a do-or-die game but falling short to the eventual champion–Salak wants her team to embrace the bigger goals this year with their intact roster bannered by Tin Ubaldo, Chenie Tagaod, Faida Bakanke, Gerz Petallo, Jean Asis, and Jaz Ellarina.
