MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine men’s football squad, more superior on the attack, blanked Singapore Lions, 2-0, in a friendly match Friday night in Jurong West Stadium in Singapore.
It was the first time the Azkals defeated the Lions, having met them 10 times in the past two decades – with the Philippines losing eight times and settling for one draw.
Striker Phil Younghusband doubled the Philippines lead early in the second half after skipper Chieffy Caligdong put the Azkals in the scoreboard early with an opening goal.
Stephan Schrock, who only joined the Philippines Thursday, fresh off his stint in Bundesliga, made his presence felt big time for the Azkals, assisting in both the goals.
Younghusband, who has sent several shots wide dating back to the Azkals’ match versus Cambodia, finally pulled one back in the 48th minute.
Caligdong found the back of the net at the eighth minute, giving the Azkals an early edge after settling for a scoreless draw against Cambodia.
The Azkals are on a three-country Southeast Asian tour as a part of their build-up for the AFF Suzuki Cup.
