NEW YORK—Sara Errani hailed Serena Williams as “incredible” on Friday after the lightweight Italian became the American’s latest humiliated US Open victim.
Errani, the 10th seed, was routed 6-1, 6-2 by the four-time champion in the semi-finals as Wimbledon and Olympic winner Williams eased into her sixth final in New York.
“For me, she’s incredible,” said Errani. “The way she won today and when she plays like this, she is the best player in the world.”
Williams hasn’t lost her serve in the tournament, dropping only 19 games in six matches.
Her second round win over Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez kept her on court for the longest stretch — and that was only 82 minutes.
On Saturday, the 30-year-old American will face world number one Victoria Azarenka, who she has beaten nine times in 10 meetings, for the title.
“I think Serena will win. Azarenka is also a strong player but Serena is another level,” said French Open runner-up Errani.
