MANILA, Philippines — Spiker Sobe Buena became the latest Ateneo player to go down with a major injury in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

According to Blue Eagles coach Sergio Veloso, Buena suffered a tear in her right ACL in a loss to University of Santo Tomas last Sunday and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

MANILA, Philippines — What was once an intense rivalry in UAAP women’s volleyball, has turned into predictable one-sided affairs with La Salle on the winning end.

Wednesday’s Ateneo-La Salle clash was no different with the Lady Spikers rolling past the Blue Eagles anew, 25-15, 25-14, 20-25, 25-19, in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena.

MANILA, Philippines — Eager to defend their school pride against their archrivals, Shevana Laput unleashed a career-high 25 points and conspired with captain Angel Canino in La Salle’s 25-15, 25-14, 20-25, 25-19 win over Ateneo in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Laput reset her career-high, drilling 19 kills, three aces, and three blocks to give La Salle its 15th straight win in its head-to-head with Ateneo dating back to Season 79 Finals Game 1 in 2017.

MANILA, Philippines — Shaina Nitura is embracing Adamson’s growing pains in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

Nitura was limited to a season-low 13 points on a 9-of-49 attacking clip as Adamson got swept by defending champion National University, 21-25. 23-25, 18-25, on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

MANILA, Philippines — National University coach Sherwin Meneses had a taste of nostalgia on Wednesday when he faced his alma mater Adamson for the first time since parting ways with the Lady Falcons in 2016.

Meneses steered the undefeated Lady Bulldogs to a 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 sweep over the Lady Falcons in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament but he also couldn’t keep himself from praising the young Adamson side led by talented rookie Shaina Nitura.

MANILA, Philippines — Jeffe Gallego provided the much-needed spark as National University survived Adamson,  20-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-12, in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Gallego spelled the difference for the Bulldogs, showing maturity beyond years and sparking a crucial third-set rally to stay alive and setting the big plays in the fifth to break a 10-10 tie.

It is, after all, National University.

And as much as Sherwin Meneses wants to keep his wards’ focus on improving with every passing game, every time the Lady Bulldogs string together a number of wins, talk of a streak will always evolve into something grander.
