MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala is still on cloud nine after pulling off the biggest win of her young career in the 2025 Miami Open.

Eala took down World No. 25 and 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, 7-6 (2), 7-5, on Saturday (Manila time) to reach the Miami Open round of 32.

“Wow, such a special win yesterday. Truly grateful to have the opportunity to play against these great players and continue working hard. Thank you for all your messages,” Eala said.

The 19-year-old Eala became the first Filipino netter to topple a top 30 player. Her stunning victory even caught the attention of tennis legend Rafael Nadal.

“Congratulations Alex! What a great win for you and for [the Philippines]!” Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam champion posted on X.

Eala, a graduate of the Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain, continues her dream run against No. 5 and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys of the United States.
