Brooke Van Sickle, Shaina Nitura headline PNVF’s Alas Pilipinas wishlist

MANILA, Philippines — Alas Pilipinas plots its road to the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December after unveiling its 33-player wishlist for the upcoming women’s team tryouts.

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) on Thursday released the list of invitees from the PVL, UAAP, and overseas. The list also includes 15 current members, who won three bronze medals from the Asian Volleyball Confederation Champions League and SEA V.League last year.

Adamson rookie sensation Shaina Nitura and PVL Filipino-Foreigners Brooke Van Sickle and Savi Davison were among the invited spikers alongside three-time PVL MVP Tots Carlos, La Salle rising star Shevana Laput, and Eli Soyud. Chai Troncoso, Alleiah Malaluan, and Vange Alinsug were also part of the wishlist with current Alas members Faith Nisperos, Bella Belen, Angel Canino, Vanie Gandler, Eya Laure, and Arah Panique.

Team captain Jia De Guzman, Julia Coronel, Filipino-American Tia Andaya, Mars Alba, and Lams Lamina were the invited setters, while Dawn Macandili-Catindig, Jen Nierva, Hannah Stires, and Justine Jazareno were on the wishlist for the libero spot.

Maddie Madayag, MJ Phillips, Amie Provido, Clarisse Loresco, and Pangs Panaga were invited to join the tryout for the middle blocker position with current members Thea Gagate, Dell Palomata, and Fifi Sharma.

“These are quality young players from the professional league PVL, from abroad and schools,” said PNVF and AVC President Tats Suzara, also the executive vice president of the FIVB or International Volleyball Federation, in a press release.

“This is a wish list of players for the national team that I fervently want to see competing for our flag and country.”

Brazilian coach Jorge Edson Sauza de Brito will supervise the tryouts–details of which will be announced soon.

“We are very confident to tap the best players in every position,” De Brito said. “The Philippines has a lot of great talents from the collegiate ranks up to the pro ranks and we are improving ever since I arrived. We just need to work hard to let the players grow.”

Alas Pilipinas will have a busy year, seeing action in the 6th AVC Challenge Cup for Women set June 8 to 15 and the SEA V. League Week 1 (July 25 to 27) and Week 2 (August 1 to 3) at still to be determined venues before gunning to end a 20-year medal drought in the Thailand SEA Games from December 7 to 19.
