Alex Eala looks to extend her historic dream run in the 2025 Miami Open as she takes on another top-ranked player in Jessica Pegula in the semifinals on Friday at 8:30 am (Manila time).

With the world watching, Eala has made an improbable run as a wildcard in the WTA 1000 tournament after knocking out three Grand Slam champions–Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek.

After beating the World No. 2 Swiatek early Thursday, Eala thanked all the Filipino fans who stayed up in the middle of the night to watch her quarterfinals match.

Alex Eala’s road to 2025 Miami Open semifinals

In her maiden Miami Open main draw, Alex Eala opened with a 6-3, 7-6(3) upset victory over World No.73 Katie Volynets on March 20.

And that was just the beginning for Filipino wildcard after she advanced to the Round of 32 by ousting World No. 25 Jeļena Ostapenko of Latvia, 7-6 (2), 7-5.

She then followed up what was first thought as the biggest win of her career with a bigger one, beating fifth seed Madison Keys 6-4, 6-2.

Stars aligned for Eala, the 19-year-old Rafael Nadal academy product, after her next opponent Paula Badosa withdraw from the Miami Open and handed her a walk-off to the quarterfinals against Iga Swiatek.

Proving her star power amid a stacked field, Eala then swept Swiatek, 6-2 7-5, to set up the semifinal against Grand Slam finalist Jessica Pegula.
