Abueva with a triple-double anew as San Sebastian routs Mapua 77-62

MANILA, Philippines – San Sebastian turned it up a notch in the second half to exact revenge on Mapua 77-62 Monday in the NCAA Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Stags trailed early and stared at a 27-38 deficit in the opening minutes of the third quarter before Calvin Abueva and Ian Sangalang somewhat decided they had enough.

Abueva and Sangalang enforced their will to power San Sebastian, which lost to the same team 54-61 in the first round, back.

Abueva, the second overall pick in the 2012 PBA Draft, had his way in the second half en route to 21 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists for his fourth triple-double of the season.

Sangalang on the other hand, had a game-high 28 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals got off to a strong start led by Josan Nimes. Nimes ended up with 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists but wasn’t much of a factor in the second half where the Stags tightened up their defense.

Both squads exchanged shots in an up-and-down third quarter. The Stags created separation just before the end of the third thanks to a handful of offensive boards that resulted to easy points.

San Sebastian solidified its hold of the number two spot with an 11-3 record.
