NEW YORK — Defending champion Novak Djokovic, the second seed from Serbia, won the fourth set of the US Open men’s final against British third seed Andy Murray on Monday by 6-3 to force a fifth set.

Murray won the first set 7-6 (12/10) and the second set 7-5 while Djokovic won the third 6-2.

Not since 1949 has a player lost the first two sets and recovered to win the US Open men’s final.

If he wins, Murray would become the first British man to win a Grand Slam title since Fred Perry in 1936.
