MANILA, Philippines—The second-round encounter between University of Santo Tomas and Adamson in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament didn’t disappoint, especially with another classic showdown between young Angge Poyos and Shaina Nitura.

With both spikers eager to push their respective squads to victory, Poyos and Nitura dueled in a pulsating five-setter that saw the Golden Tigresses having the final say.

Still, that didn’t stop Poyos from commending the Adamson star rookie after the back-and-forth battle.

“It’s great because she can score that many points,” said Poyos in Filipino after the 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 27-25, 15-8 triumph on Wednesday at Araneta Coliseum.

“‘Wag siyang sumuko and have patience lang siguro inside the court.” (I hope she doesn’t give up and has patience on the court for her next games.)

Poyos fired a team-high 27 points to power UST to a 6-4 record and stay inside the Final Four picture.

Nitura, on the other hand, exploded for a game-best 36 points but still not enough as the Lady Falcons slid to 3-9. Nitura came just two points short of tying the UAAP scoring record she set last month.

Poyos and UST swept Nitura and Adamson in their head-to-head matchup in the elimination round. The Golden Tigresses beat the Lady Falcons in the first round, 25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 27-25, on March 1.

For Poyos, though, it wasn’t about one-upping Nitura in scoring. It was simply all about raising UST’s morale after a three-game losing streak.

“Our morale dropped a bit so we started working on it during training, believing in our coaches and my teammates, personally.”

“We just thought that we could bounce back from that three-game losing streak.”
