Petro Gazz salvaged a quarterfinal spot in the AVC Women’s Champions League, scoring its first win at the expense of now eliminated Hip Hing on Tuesday.

Bouncing back from an opening game loss to Kaohsiung Taipower, the Angels manhandled the winless Hong Kong team, 25-8, 25-12, 25-12 at PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

“Everyone had a good performance. So with Rem [Palma], I expected a lot. So maybe I expected a change in atmosphere. So, she had a good performance,” coach Koji Tsuzurabara said.

MANILA, Philippines — Kianna Dy continues to show great progress on her road to full recovery from a right knee injury, which sidelined her for more than a year.

After her first start in their previous game— her first in 641 days–Dy followed it up with a solid showing in PLDT close  loss to Thai powerhouse Nakhon Ratchasima, 24-26, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 9-15, in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Champions League on Tuesday at Philsports Arena.

Dy, who had best game with 12 points, said she is making the most of her opportunity in the Asian stage as she continues to work her way back to her lethal form.

MANILA, Philippines — The PLDT High Speed Hitters may have fallen short of a reverse sweep against Nakhon Ratchasima, but their gritty stand against the seasoned Thai club proved that Filipino teams can compete at a high level in Asia.

Led by Savi Davison’s 28 points, PLDT erased a two-set deficit before eventually yielding in the fifth set, 24-26, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 9-15, to finish with a 1-1 record in Pool D of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Champions League on Tuesday at Philsports Arena.

Nakhon Ratchasima swept the Pool D of the AVC Champions League to forge a quarterfinal match against Philippine champion team Creamline.

Its latest win came from a marathon 26-24, 25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 15-9 victory over PLDT on Tuesday at PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

“I wasn’t scared at all in the rallies, I just wanted to control our team to come back and concentrate,” Onuma Sittirak said through a translator after leading her crew with xx points.

MANILA, Philippines — Kazakhstan’s Zhetysu VC booted Al Naser of Iran out of contention, 25-10, 25-15, 25-11, to advance as Pool A’s top seed in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Champions League on Tuesday at Philsports Arena.

Less than 24 hours from sweeping Creamline, the Kazakhstan league champion picked up from where it left off, finishing their group with a 2-0 record to seal the top seed and battle the loser of the Nakhon Ratchasima and PLDT from Pool D in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s VTV Binh Dien Long An recovered from a slow start before ousting Saipan Tehran, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-15, in Pool C.

Brooke Van Sickle knows the road to a deep playoff run in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Champions League won’t be smooth for the Petro Gazz Angels.

“We expect to get pushed. These are all championship teams,” said Van Sickle after the Angels fell to Taiwan’s Taipower, 25-15, 25-16, 19-25, 25-20, on Monday—a loss that puts their quarterfinal hopes in jeopardy.

But all is not lost for the reigning PVL All-Filipino champions.
