MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas formally clinched a Final Four spot in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament after sweeping University of the Philippines, 25-20, 25-21, 25-18, on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The win marked the Golden Tigresses’ fifth straight semifinal appearance, the feat also securing spots for La Salle and Far Eastern University.

“This is where the real grind begins,” UST coach Kungfu Reyes.

Angge Poyos fired 19 points, while Em Banagua tallied eight blocks against the league’s top blocking team. The Tigresses improved to 9-4 and stayed in the running for a twice-to-beat edge, with defending champion National University up next.

Detdet Pepito anchored the floor with 23 digs. Reg Jurado added 13 points, while Mabeth Hilongo had six plus 15 receptions.

UP, which finished 6-7, fell short of the Final Four but showed major improvement from last season.

“We fell short in this game, but looking at the brighter side, there’s progress,” said UP’s Joan Monares. “We’re in a much better place than last year—and that’s something to be proud of.”
