The Blue Eagles leaned on Jihan Chuatico to halt a four-game slide in the showcase and give the Katipunan-based squad something to look forward to next year.

“I think it’s going to be very bright, especially with the rookies that we have. They’re very brave and strong mentally,” the middle blocker said in Filipino, following a 16-point outing that helped Ateneo rise to a 5-9 win-loss mark despite its roster getting wrecked by a manpower crisis.

Pivotal weekend for Lady Spikers, Tigresses with final semis rankings at stake

Pivotal weekend for Lady Spikers, Tigresses with final semis rankings at stake

University of Santo Tomas (UST) is in the UAAP women’s volleyball semifinals for a fifth straight season. And this weekend, it will be all about hoping and praying on Saturday and then doing all the work the following day to get the last twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four.

La Salle’s task is the opposite, as the Lady Spikers work for a win over Far Eastern first before hoping that defending champion National U takes the fight out of the Growling Tigresses on Sunday.

That’s the scenario as the final rankings are to be determined—or get to see another playdate. But win or lose, the Tigresses have proven that UST has one of the most consistent programs in the league.

La Salle’s five-set escape act over Adamson on Wednesday showed that, even on the verge of collapse, the Lady Spikers are still very much capable of weathering a storm.

Now, with the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament Final Four picture tightening, the traditional powerhouse turns its sights on Far Eastern University (FEU)—fully aware that it is hurtling toward what could be an even more torrential challenge.

“We really need to prepare ourselves,” said cornerstone Angel Canino. “FEU battles with so much might because they also want to raise their ranking. But at the same time, of course, we’ve been given the opportunity to get the twice-to-beat, so we will push ourselves to stay in the race for that advantage.”
