MANILA, Philippines—Organizers of the 16th Asian Games will bring 30 Filipino athletes and coaches to the continental sports competition for free.
Philippine Sports Commission chair Ritchie Garcia praised the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (Gagoc) on Thursday for its generous commitment.
He said the Gagoc would pay for the expenses of 30 Filipinos during the Nov. 12 to 27 Games. It was not clear, though, if the organizers would also shoulder the airfare of the 30.
“Though we’re still within the budget, it (Gagoc’s offer) will save us a lot,” said Garcia.
The PSC has earmarked P30 million for the participation of the national team in the Asiad.
The Philippine Olympic Committee working group, headed by RP chief of mission Joey Romasanta, said 235 athletes, accompanied by coaches, trainers, support group, team managers and officials, have been included in the RP lineup for the Games.
“If the delegation head count exceeds the budget, we have to prioritize,” said Garcia, adding the budget could support only a maximum of 350 members.
