MANILA, Philippines —As promised, Bella Belen is leaving National University with a new crown on her head.

Belen finished her UAAP career as a three-time MVP after NU completed a series sweep of La Salle to complete a title repeat in Season 87 in front of 18,514 fans on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

“Honestly, I’m overwhelmed. I feel everything—happiness, sadness, excitement—all at once,” said Belen after the 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 Game 2 win where she finished18 points, 11 digs, and eight excellent receptions.

MANILA, Philippines — In a league first, the Finals MVP award was shared by the face of National University’s future–Vange Alinsug and Shaira Jardio–after the Lady Bulldogs’ successful title defense in the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball Finals.

The unprecedented decision by the school to award co-MVPs underscored the Lady Bulldogs’ depth and team-first mindset in defending their crown.

“That decision came from our NU coaching staff. They really talked it through. I’m happy with it, because honestly, for me, everyone on the team is an MVP. From Game 1 to now, this win was truly a team effort,” said NU coach Sherwin Meneses in Filipino.

MANILA, Philippines–National University cemented its status as the new standard in UAAP women’s volleyball on Wednesday night after putting away old power La Salle in Game 2 of the Season 87 championship series.

The Lady Bulldogs, on the shoulders of outgoing skipper and newly-minted Most Valuable Player Bella Belen, carved out an authoritative 25-19, 25-18, 25-19, triumph at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, clinching a second-straight championship—the first in program history.

Vange Alinsug, installed as heir apparent to cornerstones Belen and Alyssa Solomon, fittingly delivered the championship point for the Jhocson squad.

MANILA, Philippines–Before Bella Belen and the National University chase a second crown, the league’s brightest star already tabbed one of her own on Wednesday.

The Lady Bulldogs cornerstone was named Season 87 Most Valuable Player ahead of the championship series’ Game 2 at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

With a whopping 96.226 statistical points to her name, Belen blew the competition out of the water, claiming her third MVP trophy in four seasons.

But she made sure NU was also going to bring home the hardware that matters.

MANILA, Philippines — Never doubt the heart of a champion as National University kept its five-peat dream alive, staving off Far Eastern University, 25-20, 22-25, 25-15, 18-25, 15-11, in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball finals Game 2 on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The five-peat-seeking Bulldogs blew another 2-1 advantage but this time they hung tight to force a rubber match on Saturday at the same venue in Pasay City.

Jade Disquitado nailed the game-winning block on Dryx Saavedra as NU ended the match with a 5-1 run to spoil FEU’s title plans.

MANILA, Philippines — After becoming the first Ateneo Blue Eagle to win the MVP since Marck Espejo in 2018, Ken Batas is eager to put his team on the pedestal next UAAP men’s volleyball season.

“This MVP is proof that our system really works. Even though we didn’t hit our goal this season, we know our team still has more potential. I believe we have a strong chance to bounce back next season,” said the newly-crowned Season 87 MVP Batas in Filipino on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Batas decided to return next season amid graduating with a course in Interdisciplinary Studies Tracks in Filipino Literature and Management Minor in Marketing and is determined to settle an unfinished business for Ateneo, which missed the Final Four for the third straight year with a 7-7 record.

MANILA, Philippines — Coach Sherwin Meneses relished his first UAAP Finals experience, steering National University past La Salle and its multi-titled mentor Ramil De Jesus in Game 1 of their best-of-three series.

“This is my first finals, and of course, you can really feel that we’re playing for the pride of our school. There are a lot of people watching, the games are exciting, and I’m personally excited to try and get our first win,” said Meneses in Filipino after NU’s 25-17, 25-21, 13-25, 25-17 victory in front of 15,192 fans at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Playing in the Finals, whether it’s in the pros or college. There’s always a big crowd. I think this is a great example of how far volleyball has come in our community.”

MANILA, Philippines — National University star Bella Belen won her third MVP in her final UAAP playing year while Adamson’s Shaina Nitura was the runaway Season 87 Rookie of the Year after a record-breaking debut.

Belen has joined an elite club as a three-time MVP winner along with the likes of Alyssa Valdez of Ateneo from Seasons 76 to 78 and Far Eastern University’s Monica Aleta from 2000 to 2002.

The fourth-year Lady Bulldog garnered 96.23 Statistical Points, way ahead of runner-up Nitura, who had 74.26 SPs to become Adamson’s first Rookie of the Year in the women’s volleyball Final Four era.

Vange Alinsug stepped up in a big way when one of National University’s big guns fired blanks on Sunday, and that was a big reason why the Lady Bulldogs have a chance to wrap up the Season 87 crown of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

She insisted, though, that there was nothing special behind what she did.

“We didn’t do anything different because what we are doing was not for ourselves alone but for the team,” Alinsug told the Inquirer in Filipino after firing 21 points, including the match-clinching point in a 25-17, 25-21, 13-25, 25-17 Game 1 victory over La Salle.

MANILA, Philippines — Shaira Jardio has no doubt National University can complete a historic repeat as it goes for a series sweep against La Salle in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball Finals on Wednesday.

The game will be played at Mall of Asia Arena, where the Lady Bulldogs captured their first two titles in the past three years.

With Bella Belen and Vange Alinsug doing the damage in offense, Jardio played the x-factor with her steady floor defense of 28 excellent receptions and 18 excellent digs to take Game 1 from La Salle, 25-17, 25-21, 13-25, 25-17, on Sunday in front of 15,192 fans at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

MANILA, Philippines — Five-peat-seeking National University gave Far Eastern University its flowers after pulling off a come-from-behind win in five sets in Game 1.

The Bulldogs, though, vowed to live another day and force a rubber match in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball Finals on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

NU blew a 2-1 match advantage as FEU unleashed a spirited comeback led by main scorer Dryx Saavedra and rookie Amet Bituin to inch a win closer from ending its opponents’ four-year title reign with a 22-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 15-13 win on Sunday before an ecstatic crowd of 5,405 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
