Gary David, the PBA’s scoring king, and two-time MVP Willie Miller are no doubt the most lethal weapons in the offensive arsenal of Global Port Batang Pier.
And if these two veteran wingmen perform above par, the rookie ballclub of owner Mikee Romero could make a good account of itself in the 38th season of the PBA two weeks from now.
Romero described the Miller-David combo as the reincarnation of the Mac Cardona and LA Tenorio tandem in his Harbour Centre team, which produced a record seven consecutive championships in the defunct Philippine Basketball League.
“It depends on where these two (David and Miller) will bring us,” said Romero during yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s Malate.
The suave and amiable team owner also considers 2011 PBA rookie of the year Rabeh Al-Hussaini as another huge scoring threat.
“Of course, Rabeh is our third option, but it’s Gary and Willie who will be our main weapons. I expect another MVP run for Gary this season, and for Willie to give this rookie team his brand of leadership,” said Romero.
He’s not expecting a quick title run on Global Port’s rookie season but Romero assured his players would have to fight like there’s no more tomorrow whenever they step on the PBA floor.
Batang Pier will have its baptism of fire right on the opening night of the pro league on Sept. 30 against crowd-drawer Barangay Ginebra Kings.
“We haven’t stepped onto the court for our first game, but I tell you, these players will fight like lions, like tigers,” said Romero.
Miller, who captured MVP honors in 2002 and 2007, also graced the session presented by Smart, Shakey’s and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.
Also present were basketball operations manager Eric Arejola, team manager BJ Manalo, coach Glen Capacio, assistant Ricky Dandan and Batang Pier players Rey Guevarra and Al-Hussaini.
