Sabal brothers lead RP charge in Camsur 42K
CAMARINES SUR, Philippines—Reigning Milo Marathon champion Crescenciano Sabal and brother Elmer will carry the homegrown hopes’ challenge against a foreign field that includes Kenyans and Ethiopians in the inaugural Camsur Marathon, which starts and ends at the CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC) Convention Center here Sunday. Alley Quisay, Crifrankreadel Indapan, Eric Panique, Irineo Raquin and Rafael Poliquit are the other noted Filipino male runners. Leading the homegrown female bets are Mary Grace Delos Santos, Luisa Raterta, Miscelle Gilbuena, Belle Grandinetti and Ailene Tolentino, all perennial winners in the local scene. Vincent Kipchirchir Chepsiror, the 2009 Subic International Marathon winner, Kibress Kwemoi and Susan Jemutai Chepkwony, all regulars in Philippine races, will be joined by, among others, compatriots Henry Cherono, John Mutai, Bernard Kimuigei, Anna Jelagat Kibor and Rael Kimaiyo. The 32-year-old Cherono notched his latest win during the Taipei Express Marathon last March. He beat local bet Chiang Chieh-wen with a time of two hours, 24 minutes and seven seconds. The Taiwanese clocked 2:27:37. Cherono also holds the best personal record among all foreigners with a time of 2:10:26. Russia’s Tatiana Vilosova and Ethiopia’s Ayelu Geda and Radiya Roba are also first-time participants in a Philippine race. Scotland and Singapore are also sending representatives.
