MANILA, Philippines—Canada overcame a tough challenge from Libya, 22-25, 25-20, 25-12, 29-27, in the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship at Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
Sharone Vernon-Evans and Nicholas Hoag combined for 42 points to lead the Canadians, who recovered from a subpar start and got their Group G campaign going.

Fynn McCarthy added 12 points while Jackson Young helped put on the finishing touches for Canada.
“We just needed to find our top level and we did that in the end,” McCarthy said.
“I love to play tight matches and important moments so it’s huge. It builds a lot of confidence for us,” he added.

Vernon-Evans unleashed a game-high 22 points on top of three blocks, while Nicholas Hoag recorded 20 points.
Ahmed Ikhbayri and Mohamed Ikhbayri had 17 points each to pace Libya.
Canada aims for a second consecutive win on Monday against fan favorite Japan at 2 p.m. at the same venue.
