FIVB Men’s World: Canada gives Japan the boot, eyes top spot

MANILA, Philippines—Canada played heartbreakers in the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship at Araneta Coliseum on Monday.
Canada clinched a spot in the Round of 16 and booted out fan-favorite Japan with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-22 sweep in Pool G.

“Everyone’s over the moon for sure, we did our main goal of making the playoffs,” Sharone Vernon-Evans told the Inquirer.
“We got really good at staying composed to come out on top and that’s really good for the team.”

Vernon-Evans led Canada with 14 points while Nicholas Hoag added 13.
Ran Takahashi tallied 11 points while Kento Miyaura contributed 10 in the Ryujin Nippon’s failed attempt to make the playoffs.

After advancing to the next phase, the Canadians have turned their attention to securing the top seed in their group.
It won’t be easy though as they take on Turkiye, which is also 2-0, in their final preliminary match on Wednesday at the same venue.
“We are going to push as hard as we can. We’re here to win every game we can and fight as hard as we can,” Sharone-Evans said.
