AIR FORCE kicked off its United Football League Cup title defense on a positive note by blanking Agila, 2-0, Sunday in Group D play at Nuvali field in Sta. Rosa City.

Showing they’re far from over the hill, veterans Yanti Barsales and Randy Bela-ong found the back of the net as the Airmen gained a share of top spot with Army, which earlier stunned Stallion, 2-0.

Proving their worth, Kaya and Nomads also pulled off narrow victories despite the difficult field conditions.

A brace from Nate Burkey sealed Kaya’s victory, which sent the UFL first-division first runner-up to the top of Group B. Burkey could have completed a hat-trick in the 76th minute, but saw his free header sail over the bar.

The Filipino-American, who has one international goal for the Philippines, took his tally to three goals this season.

Nomads squeaked past Laos, 1-0, in a crucial Group C encounter. Phil Connoly scored in the 72nd minute for Nomads, who were reduced to 10 men when Steve Borril was sent off in the second half for a second yellow card.
