Black tipped to coach SEAG 5

Ateneo coach Norman Black will handle the first national team made up of collegiate stars that will defend the men’s basketball title in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games.

A ranking Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas official said yesterday that Black has already agreed to handle the team of aces from the UAAP and the NCAA which will be reinforced by Greg Slaughter and Aldrech Ramos.

The same source said Far Eastern U coach Glen Capacio has also expressed interest in becoming Black’s deputy for the SEA Games campaign set in Indonesia next year.

Executive director Noli Eala confirmed SBP’s interest in both coaches but said a formal announcement would be made after the UAAP championship between Ateneo and FEU.

“Norman has the experience, and he’s also familiar with international play,” said Eala.

Black, 52, won 10 PBA championships after playing in the league as an import.

Eala said reigning UAAP MVP RR Garcia of FEU, University of the East’s Paul Lee and Ken Acibar, Ateneo’s Nico Salva, La Salle’s Sam Marata, and Jeric Teng of Santo Tomas have the strongest chances of making the team.
