SCHEDULE: UAAP Season 88 volleyball tournament – first round

MANILA, Philippines — Defending champion National University turned to the Alas Pilipinas trio of Buds Buddin, Leo Ordiales, and Jade Disquitado once again to rout Adamson, 25-13, 25-18, 25-15, for an early 2-0 lead in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

Ordiales finished with 16 points off 11 attacks, three blocks, and two aces, along with three excellent digs. Buddin contributed 15 points off 12 attacks and three aces to go with 10 excellent receptions, while Disquitado added 11 points and five excellent receptions.

Besides the Alas trio who played in the FIVB World Championship and won bronze in the Southeast Asian Games, Congolese middle blocker Obed Mukaba also stepped up with seven points on five attacks, one block, and one ace.`

“You could see in the setter’s distribution that everyone was working and getting touches. I’m thankful for the team’s performance because the game plan we prepared and practiced really showed in the match,” said NU coach Dante Alinsunurin in Filipino.

“We saw that when our passing and serving are good, we’re able to control the game better. So we’ll continue focusing on our serve and receive to make sure we can control break points and dictate the outcome of the match.”

NU, which eyes a ‘six-peat’ this season, battles runner-up Far Eastern University on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

No Falcons scored in double figures as they fell to 1-1.  Richard Besorio and Leo Coguimbal led the way with six points each, while rookie Jims Ducusin, who scored 23 points against Ateneo on Sunday, was limited to five points and two excellent digs.
