Franco Victor Puey Reyes salvaged third runner-up after a tough loss in the final race of Round 1 of the Asian Karting Open Championship over the weekend in Macau.
The 15-year-old sophomore from Ateneo started fifth on the grid and challenged the vaunted Indonesian stranglehold in all the races leading to the final.
The last lap saw Hishamuddin of Malaysia overtake Sasakorn of Thailand. Reyes took the opportunity to catch up with Sasakorn.
But the Thai, determined to regain lost ground, rammed into Reyes in the ensuing corner, paving the way for Hishamuddin to cross the finish line first.
However, Hishamuddin was disqualified for being under the minimum weight requirement and Sasakorn was penalized 3 seconds for excessive bumping. Indian driver Arjun Maini was eventually awarded the champion’s trophy.
