THE Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines was forced to cancel its election scheduled on Oct. 26 after only seven of 30 voting members confirmed their attendance.
Abap executive director Ed Picson said the polls slated in Bago City, Negros Occidental, was supposed to forge a mutual agreement between current Abap president Ricky Vargas and former head Manny Lopez.
Vargas, a top deputy of sportsman and tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan, confirmed his decision to retain the Abap presidency in the hopes of nailing the country’s first gold medal in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
The president of Maynilad is also looking to lead a boxing program that could produce several medals in the 2014 Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games and other international meets.
“Winning the Olympic gold is just a matter of time and we’re doing everything we can to get the job done,” said Vargas.
